Working with scars and stretch marks offers an opportunity to explore the deepest aspects of the human condition.

Instead of shying away from a potentially emotional topic, massage therapists can offer a safe space to explore the past as a way to create more clarity in the present.

[Republished article – read full article here]

Massage therapy is based on safe touch and trust. Helping clients inhabit their bodies more fully and with more awareness is one of our goals as therapists.

It is rare that someone comes into my practice who doesn’t have a least one scar from a scrape, fall or cut.

Many clients have more dramatic scars from medical interventions or a traumatic event. Many women have experienced pregnancy and childbirth and have stretch marks and even scars from this.

When I see a scar or feel irregular tissue, I want to know more—I want to know about the event(s) that lead to the scarring.

I want to know how the client feels about this tissue and how it feels to her. This background information helps me target various levels of awareness while working with the client.

Living Tissue

Scars, burns and stretched tissues are living tissue. Massage therapists can help address the fallacy that nothing can be done to change this tissue by practicing focused therapy on scars and burns.

Clients need to be educated about the living matrix so they can bring attention and touch to injured or damaged areas.

This attention will help re-program false thoughts and rewire the brain to re-map and re-integrate this tissue back into the whole system.

All of us—clients and massage practitioners—need to practice self-care. Taking care of oneself is a proven way to stimulate health and wellness…

A quick reminder of the benefits of massage in winter.

When the weather is cold some people get seasonal affective disorder due to lack of sunshine. Massage can be a great mood lifter as it relaxes and gives us a a sense of rejuvenation as well as releasing serotonin and endorphin chemicals . It also helps our lymphatic system clean out waste can help lower blood pressure and helps boost your circulation. It also helps keep the skin soft and moist as it seems to dry in winter .

Our massage studio room is warm and I have the hot stones going at all times!

I have recently completed the Strait Method short for Scar Tissue Release and Integrated Therapies with Marjorie Brook her website is www.marjoriebrook.com and she has some interesting articles and a more in depth description about the courses she takes and about scar tissue in general.

I have also purchased a dolphin MPS device to help break down scars using a concentrated DC micro current and for the purpose of relaxing muscles, calming the nervous system and releasing endorphins the body’s natural painkillers. The dolphin is engineered to detect and treat these active points with scientific precision providing stimulation of all three systems at once – nervous muscular and endocrine. It is like acupuncture without the needles. Scar tissue continues to accumulate until the wound is healed. Excess scar formation occurs when people take longer to heal than normal. If they sleep on one side for example one side of the scar heals different. Blood and energy do not flow through scar tissue as it is thicker and more fibrous than regular tissue. This means that blood and energy must go around the scar tissue and thus pain is created and other consequences of minimal blood flow appear e.g. Headaches, pain, numbness, dull skin colour or dry skin. If you have microcurrent treatments immediately following surgery it will accelerate the healing process and minimize the formation of scar tissue. Clients see results sooner than those who don’t use it following surgery.

Scars due to accidental trauma or to medical surgery are frequently the cause of blockage in acupuncture channels. Any condition that blocks or impedes this free flow of energy is cause for concern. Scars can disrupt the body’s energy flow and using the dolphin mps will help prevent this.

See www.dolphinmps.com for more information.

Fascia

About Fascia, imagine your body being wrapped entirely in glad wrap. When you tug on one part of the wrap it will tighten elsewhere. If you tugged hard enough the wrap could tear if there is enough tension placed on it. Our body has a system like this just beneath the surface of our skin.

Fascia is connective tissue which wraps around muscles, surrounds the nerves, wraps around organs providing support. It has the appearance of a very thin spider web and is in fact a web of fibrous collagen.

When in a healthy state it is relaxed but when excessive physical strain or trauma occurs the fascia becomes tense, this can cause pain and discomfort but also limits the muscles range of motion.

Scar tissue and fascial adhesions are the result of our body’s natural process of healing which occurs inside and out. If working correctly this body process eliminates scars and adhesions once the wound is healed. In some cases, the scar tissue is not broken down by the body. This adhered tissue continues to spread which can trigger compensations in the body and some scientists are beginning to believe that scar tissue is at the root of a majority of our muscular problems.

Adhesions are bands of scar tissue that anchor and support the wound. It binds together all tissue it comes into contact with. Adhesions may be thought of as internal scar tissue. Although adhesions can occur anywhere, the most common locations are within the stomach, pelvis and heart . Scar Tissue Release Therapy is easy to apply and yields great results that can prevent a lifetime of compensation, complications and pain. This therapy helps release and realign the restrictive tissue from the starting point (visible scar) to the end point (where the line of frozen fascia stops) This release system differs from traditional methods because it approaches the multi-faceted matrix of fascia three dimensionally. I can also show you how to continue to do this yourself from home.
